Maryland Electric Bill Assistance Programs

If you are a Maryland resident in need of electric bill assistance, there are several different programs that could potentially be of help to you. So if you have fallen behind on your electric or utility bills, be sure to check out these Maryland electric bill assistance resources.

Federal Programs

Federal utility assistance programs are available to residents all over the United States. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Programs (LIHEAP) are federally funded programs available to residents of Maryland.

State and Local Programs

State Programs include the Maryland Energy Assistance Program (MEAP) to help replace broken or inefficient furnaces.

The Electric Universal Service Program (EUSP), another state program, assists residents who need help paying their electric bills. Assistance for past due and current bills is available, along with assistance for energy efficiency improvements to reduce future bills. Call 1-800-352-1446 for more information.

The Utility Service Protection Program (USPP) helps low income families and people avoid having their utilities shut off. The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) helps eligible residents weatherize their home to be more fuel effecient at no cost.

Utility Company Assistance

In addition to the federal and state programs available, assistance may be available directly from your utility company.

Customers of of Baltimore Gas and Electric may be eligible for their Customer Assistance Maintenance Program (CAMP). Contact 410-685-0123 to inquire about your eligibility.

If you are a customer of Alleghany Power, contact 1-800-255-3443 for information on their assistance plans.

For other utility companies, contact your provider directly to see what energy assistance programs may be available to you.

Remember that these programs involve the use of energy credits. These rebates are applied to your electricity bill to lower what you owe. This can be done in an emergency to prevent a service disconnection. It can also be implemented on a permanent basis to lower all future power bills.

Local charities that are supported by United Way or the Community Action Partnership generally apply a one-time bill credit for an emergency disconnection situation. The easiest way to get connected with a Maryland electricity assistance charity is to dial 211.
