Delaware electric bill assistance

Delaware residents who are struggling with paying their electric bills have several sources of help available to them. See if you qualify for one of the following Delaware electric bill assistance programs.

One program available for Delawareans who are struggling is the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). This program use federal funds and is administered through the Division of State Service Centers (DSSC) and Catholic Charities, Inc.

This program is available to those who have a family income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. Eligible residents can receive grants to help pay for their home energy bills in the months from October to March. This will cover homes heated by electricity as well as natural gas, kerosene, propane, coal and wood. Crisis help is also available.

In Delaware, LIHEAP can also cover cooling costs through the Summer Cooling Assistance Program (SCAP) during the summer months. Information about these programs can be found through contacting the Catholic Charities offices in Wilmington, Dover, or Georgetown.

Delaware residents who struggle with electric bills can also benefit from weatherization, so that their heating and cooling costs are reduced. The Delaware Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) can help by providing the changes to your home to make it more energy efficient. Help for this program can also be found through Catholic Charities.

These programs can help Delawareans pay their electric bills when they get out of hand. Remember, you may qualify for more than one program, so it is worth contacting each one, even if you have been denied elsewhere. Keep in mind also that you are generally expected to attempt to get help through your local social services agency before contacting other service providers. Delaware electric bill assistance programs generally include a prerequisite that you have already been denied by the county agency before they will consider your request for direct funding.
