Advantages of Having a Roommate

Usually, having a roommate is associated with college students and young adults. However, it is becoming more common living situation for people of all ages. Though roommates may come with many challenges, if you choose wisely, it will bring in many benefits as well. It is recommended that you choose someone you know well, and to talk to them beforehand about likes and dislikes so you know if you’re on the same page or not.

The biggest advantage of having a roommate is that it saves money. Who wouldn’t want to do that? More than just sharing the cost of rent, they also share the expense of utilities and sometimes even furniture and other big appliances (if those need to be purchased). Some people find that by choosing to live with another person, they are able to live in a nicer place than they could afford on their own.

Another benefit is that you may be able to save gas money. If you and your roommate have to go to the same area for school or work, you can carpool to save money. If you both have cars, you can take turns driving every day, or every week.

A third advantage to having a roommate is that it saves times on chores. Whether it be doing the dishes, cleaning the kitchen, vacuuming the floors, or cleaning the bathroom, living with someone who has similar cleaning habits can help keep the load off just one person. By working out a cleaning schedule and sticking to it, you will only have to do half the chores.

Apart from the financial aspect, having a roommate allows for a new friendship to start or an old friendship to just get stronger. You will always have someone to talk to, and share the events of your daily life with. If you find yourself going through a dilemma and need someone’s advice, maybe your roommate would be able to help you out. It is just important to find someone who will fit your lifestyle and living habits well. So this way you can enjoy the benefits listed above, amongst many others.
